What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which it is extracted localized fat in different parts of the body. Mainly in: abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, chin, chest and buttocks.

This intervention can be performed with local or general anesthesia. So the patient will not notice anything at any time.

It is necessary to emphasize that it is not a method to combat obesity.

Generally, there is a maximum BMI for a patient to safely undergo surgery. And for this reason, before undergoing the treatment, a interview with the surgeon so that you can analyze its characteristics and offer you the best guarantees.

How is the operation carried out?

Starting with an incision that is made near the part to be treated, the cannula is inserted (a type of syringe) which is responsible for reaching the area in which they are located fat cells that are to be extracted.

The cannula is connected to a vacuum machine that suctions the fatty tissue from the area being treated.

Like during liposuction too essential fluids for the body are lost (electrolytes), only one can be extracted 10% of the patient's weight per session. This means that, for safety, the procedure is spread over time to perform other sessions to safely extract more fat.

The duration of treatment depends on the characteristics of the patient and the results sought. It generally lasts 90 to 180 minutes.

Normally, after the intervention, the patient usually goes home once the effects of the local or epidural anesthesia wear off. Therefore, it is not necessary to remain admitted. It would be a outpatient intervention.

It is true that in the case of some patients, they could stay during the day for a few hours to see the evolution, or for one night. But generally this is not necessary. Dr. Weigand will be in charge of making this decision for your safety.

It should be noted that liposuction is one of the interventions safest there is, but we also do not have to skimp on resources to achieve optimal results.

Everything you need to know about liposuction

Postoperative

During the postoperative period it is necessary to use compression girdles so that the tissues stay in place and the skin regain elasticity. In addition, it is a way to control inflammation.

The return to activity has been carried out gradually. That does not mean that, if you feel well after a few days, you cannot take 20-minute walks without straining so that the body, as well as the lymphatic and circulatory system, can reactivate.

It is recommended do not smoke or drink alcohol so that complications do not arise during the healing period.

Types of liposuction for Lipedema

  • WAL Liposuction

WAL liposuction uses a special serum that makes it easier for fat clumps to fall away. Therefore, it is a specific treatment designed to combat Lipedema since it takes care of the areas surrounding the fatty tissue affected by this disease. Click if you want to know more about this technique.

  • PAL Liposculpture

PAL liposculpture is a type of liposuction that uses a cannula (type of syringe) that vibrates to remove fatty tissues. In this way, the surrounding tissues are cared for, and offers a higher safety rate. Click yes on this link if you want to know more about PAL liposculpture.

Frequent questions

That depends on the personalized case of each patient. For this reason, the surgeon's assessment is necessary so that he can recommend the way in which exceptional results are going to be achieved and the best guarantees are assured.

The postoperative period can be different for each patient regardless of the treatment. But, in this case, as both treatments are designed to combat Lipedema and reduce the risks, they have almost the same characteristics and results.

Treatment for a standard patient

In this case, the patient would not present any problem or inconvenience when performing the treatment. This depends on the characteristics of each patient, but generally the procedure usually has the following characteristics:

The patient would be applied epidural, or the intervention would be carried out with Local anesthesia and sedation. The intervention would last between 90 and 180 minutes. As for hospitalization, in principle you would not have to stay hospitalized. And the results would be optimal.

At most, in the particular case of some patients, they could stay in the hospital during the day, or overnight. Dr. Weigand would have to assess that. But normally, it's not necessary. It would be an outpatient intervention (without admission).
